World War II Medal of Honor Recipient. He entered the U.S. Army at Albany, New York and served as a Private in the 18th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division. In the vicinity of St. Laurent-sur-Mer, France, on the morning of D-Day, June 6, 1944, he and his unit, landing in the face of extremely heavy enemy fire and was forced to wade ashore through neck-deep water. Disregarding personal danger, he returned to the surf again and again to assist his floundering comrades from drowning. In intense small-arms and mortar fire on the landing points, he working with
fierce determination, saved many lives by carrying casualties to an evacuation boat offshore. In addition to his assigned duties, he carried dispatches along the fire-swept beach, assisted the wounded, calmed the shocked and arose as a leader in the stress of the occasion. His citation was issued on October 2, 1944.
