Elizabeth L. Bender, a Peninsula resident who actively maintained a life-long interest in her home town, died April 23, 1986 at age 80.
She was the first child of Elmer Bronson Conger, Peninsula's first mayor, who served in that position 28 years, from 1901-1929. Following her graduation as valedictorian from Peninsula High School, she continued her studies at Akron University. At age 18 she began a nine year teaching career at Ellet, Hudson, Twinsburg and Peninsula High Schools.
Mrs. Bender had many civic interests. She was a local Girl Scout leader, a founder of the Peninsula Library, a president of the Peninsula Garden Club, and a councilperson for the Village of Peninsula. Mrs. Bender was often referred to as the "Bridge Lady". Her love of flowers and the community inspired her to plant and maintain flower boxes on the town bridge over the Cuyahoga River.
In 1969 she and her husband restored the Conger Family Homestead, an American Gothic house, constructed in 1844. The house was originally built from bricks fired from the Conger family brickyard.
Mrs. Bender was preceded in death after 49 years of marriage, by her husband, Henry G. Bender, co-founder of Bender & Loudon Motor Frieght & Jaite Packaging, Inc. She is survived by daughters, Jean Preston, Gail McLean and her son, Robert Bender. She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Conger, and is survived by brothers, Elmer, Charles, George and Arthur Conger. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren; and one great- grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at the Peninsula Methodist Church at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 26. There will be no calling hours. The family suggest that memorials can be made to the Peninsula Library and Historical Society, 6105 Riverview Rd., Peninsula, Ohio 44264.

Betty Bender once said "If you haven’t lived in Peninsula for at least thirty years then you’re just passing though".
