NATIONAL CITY, Calif. - Lawrence T. Burke Sr., 73, of 3014 East 11th St., formerly of North Brookfield, Mass., died Oct. 5 in Balboa Naval Hospital, San Diego, after a long illness. His wife, Hazel (Hatstat) Belmore Burke, died in 1991. He leaves a son, Lawrence T. Burke Jr. of Lemon Grove; a stepson, Dean J. Belmore of El Cajon; a stepdaughter, Deborah Dorr of Bonita; three brothers, Raymond F. Burke of East Brookfield, William H. Burke of El Cajon and James J. Nolan of East Pepperell, Mass.; five grandchildren; two great-grandsons; nephews and nieces. He was born in North Brookfield, son of James J. and Letitia (McGrath) Burke, and lived here 45 years. Mr. Burke attended North Brookfield High School and earned a general equivalency diploma in the Navy. He joined the Navy in 1942 and served there for 31 years, retiring as a master chief petty officer in 1973. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Asian-Pacific theater; the Korean War, serving in Korea; and the Vietnam War era. He received a Purple Heart. Mr. Burke then taught welding at El Cajon Valley High School for eight years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Naval Reserve Association in San Diego. The military funeral was held Oct. 8 in Glen Abbey Chapel, Bonita. Burial was in Bonita. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 7 Oak St., Worcester, Mass. 01609
