Lester Charles Hood was born in Panora, Iowa, March 7, 1895 to Miss Jessie Hood. He was raised by his mother, first in his grandfather's home (John H.G. Hood), which in 1900 consisted of John H.G. and six of his children, in addition to grandson Lester. Lester then lived with Jessie and Edgar Montgomery after they married April 17, 1907. He graduated from Guthrie County High School in Panora and then worked as a mechanic. Lester served in the army during World War I, in the 20th Artillery, 5th Division, which saw action in France. His draft registration describes him as having blue eyes, light brown hair, being of medium height and medium weight. After his military duty, he returned to Panora. Lester died November 10, 1933, reportedly by suicide. He was survived by his mother, Jessie (Hood) Montgomery, her husband Edgar Montgomery, two sisters, Eva Lucille and Edna Montgomery and several aunts and uncles.
