William Robert, "Bill" or "Will" was the first born son of John & Lucy Brown Porter. He had eight siblings to survive to adulthood. They were Albert, Mary, Sarah, Mark and Marcille, Lee, Dorsey and Charlie. Those who died young were Mandy, James, John and Jessie.

Will's parents and all his siblings moved to Greenville, South Carolina about 1906 to work in the cotton mills, and married and raised their families there. Since Will was already married and had a baby, he remained in Polk County.

William married America Holden 9 November 1903, daughter of Drewry and Martha Garrison Holden and they had five daughters, Jewell, Florence, Pearl, Willie and Dorsey Lee. Two little sons died young.

Will was a farmer, plowing his fields with his old mule, John. He was also a blacksmith, and one of the best cane syrup makers around.

In his later years, he was a faithful member of Old Ocoee Baptist Church.
