PARENTS: William (b.1813) and Mary (Morgan)(1812-1885) McCormick, from Fayette County, Pennsylvania. The Morgan, Rees and McCormick families were some of the first settlers to LaSalle County, Illinois. William was born outside the town of Streator.

MILITARY: During the War Between the States, 19 year old William joined the Union Army on May 3, 1864. He served as a corporal with the Union Army, Company "I" - 138th Illinois Infantry ..."organized at Camp Wood, Quincy, Ill., by Col. John W. Goodwin, and was mustered in June 21, 1864, for one hundred days. On 26th July, the Regiment moved to Fort Leavenworth, Kas., and was assigned to garrison duty, Colonel Goodwin commanding post...from July 7th to August 3d-Brigadier Gen. Thomas A. Davis commanding District of North Kansas, and Maj. General Curtis commanding Dept. of Kansas. The Regiment was mustered out...at Springfield, Ill., October 14th, 1864." Military records indicate William had black eyes, dark hair & complexion and was 6'2" in height.

SPOUSE: He married Elizabeth Mount Van Doren on January 7, 1868 in LaSalle County. She was born May 11, 1844 in Farmington, IL, and survived William. (Do you know her burial place?) On their 53rd wedding anniversary William died at his home near Hagerman, "four and one-half miles west of town about 1 a.m. Jan. 7th." [from Obit]

His obituary states he had seven children--"Dr. Olin McCormick, deceased; Mrs. W. N. Perry of Hagerman; Mrs. John W. Coffee, Dr. I. B. McCormick and Alice, of Hagerman; Roscoe, of Wauconda, Ill.; and William, of Champaign, Ill. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. A. E. Silvers, of Chicago and Mrs. Mary Simpson, of Champaign, Ill.; and three brothers, Reese and Morgan, of Iowa, and Worth, of Tuscola, Ill."

And, "Those from out of town to attend the funeral were Mr. And Mrs. W. C. Van Doren, Mrs. Edward Bartlett and son, Walter, Miss Grace Bartlett and Mrs. C. S. Brewster, all of Roswell, N. Mex."

"A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is still.
A place is vacant in our home
Which never can be filled.
God, in His wisdom, has recalled
The boon, His love had given.
And tho' the body slumbers here,
The soul is safe in Heaven."
(From a Chaves County newspaper, name/date unknown...alas!)

CHILDREN: Olin McCormick, Grace (McCormick) Van Doren Perry, Dorothy Elta (McCormick) Coffee, Roscoe Conkling McCormick, Ivor McCormick
