Herman was born in Delmenhorst, Niedersachsen.

He served in the Wehrmacht in Rommel's Afrika Korps. He was captured by British forces in North Africa, and died of pneumonia in the McAlester P.O.W. Camp.

The German prisoners arriving at McAlester in September 1942 were from Rommel's Afrika Korps. They were captured by the British and were sent to the U.S. under an agreement to relieve overcrowding at British detention facilities.

Each of the 3 Compounds held 1000 prisoners. The 400 guards were housed in barracks inside the Camp.
