He went on to a successful career as a civil engineer, and as Chief Engineer, he was responsible for the laying out and construction of many railroads that ran in in New England from 1831 to 1842. He served as United States Consul to the government of the Kingdom of Saxony from 1850 to 1851, and rose to the rank of Colonel in the Massachusetts Militia.
