On Thursday, April 25, 2013, lifelong Lake Crystal area resident Dorothy Lucille (Dackins) Duffey, passed on to her heavenly home. She died at Autumn Grace Assisted Living, Mankato, MN surrounded by her family members. Dorothy was 92 years old.

Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church, Lake Crystal. Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m., Tuesday at Lake Crystal Mortuary and will continue one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be in Minneopa Cemetery, rural Mankato. Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church, Lake Crystal.

Dorothy was born on February 25, 1921 in Judson Township, Blue Earth County Minnesota. She was the oldest of four daughters born to David and Margaret (Jones) Dackins. Dorothy was wonderfully influenced by her Welsh heritage, and she talked about growing up in a home where only Welsh was spoken. Although she did not remember the Welsh language as she matured, Dorothy passed on the traditions especially the Welsh tea cakes she baked, and Welsh music she loved to sing.

Dorothy attended the Carmel Grade School and Lake Crystal High School where she completed as much education as she was able before she left to help her parents on their Judson farm. When she was twenty years old, she married the love of her life, Kenneth Duffey on June 21, 1941 in Mankato, MN at the Centenary Methodist Church parsonage. Starting from scratch, she and Ken were partners in farming until his sudden death in 1967 at age forty five. After Ken's death, Dorothy took over the farming responsibilities until her two young sons were old enough to take the reins. Her family remembers many evenings when she would climb down from the combine and cook their supper.

Over the years Dorothy was active in the First Presbyterian Church, Lake Crystal, MN where she served as both an elder and deacon, and was a member of the Presbyterian Women's Association. She was active in the Loon Lake Extension Club. Dorothy enjoyed the yearly Gymanfa Ganu singing at the First Presbyterian Church in Mankato. She instilled the love of singing in her own children, whether they were good singers or not. In her later years she volunteered her time and brought baked goods to residents and staff at Autumn Grace. It was difficult for Dorothy to leave her home in the country outside of Lake Crystal where she had resided for many years. After she suffered a stroke and broken hip, she moved to Autumn Grace Assisted Living where staff graciously and patiently cared for her.
Dorothy loved to garden, bake, shop, walk, ride her three wheel bicycle, and drive her car (in which she was known to have "a lead foot."). She loved visits to the River Hills Mall, Dairy Queen, chocolate candy, lemon meringue and pumpkin pies, Jake's pizza, sweet corn, and the flowers she tended in her gardens. Dorothy was a spiritual woman and a healer with her many home remedies.

She had a strong heart, but more so, she had a good heart. Dorothy was a woman of faith and courage, devoted to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was there for her family whenever they needed her: laughing during celebrations and crying over their sorrows, caring for children, taking them to appointments, attending school programs when parents couldn't be there, making sure they were on time for the school bus, helping with their moves, gently encouraging them to attend church, respecting, understanding and loving them regardless of the decisions they made. She taught her family to treasure the important things in life, like digging and planting in the earth, baking cookies, feeding the birds and rocking babies to sleep. Dorothy's family and future generations of her family have been blessed to have her in their lives now and forever more.

Dorothy is survived by her five children: Darlene Trujillo of Jackson, Wyoming, Gloria (Donald) Adermann of North Mankato, Nancy (Theo) Black of Wayzata, Duane Duffey (partner, Jeff Loken) of Savage, and Dean Duffey (Pauline) of Lake Crystal; and special family member, Margaret Duffey; her thirteen grandchildren, Kara (Trujillo) McCormick (special friend, Eric Borgeson), Patrick Trujillo (special friend, Martina Hansen), Lana Adermann, Travis Adermann, Laura (Scott) Butler, Heather (Brad) Bass, Laura Black, Sarah Duffey, John Duffey, William Duffey (fiancé Colleen Williams), Andy (Danielle) Duffey, Melissa (Cole) Nelson, Alex Duffey (special friend, Tiffany Marshall); fifteen great grandchildren: Bailey and Macie McCormick, Jaden Adermann, Sophie Klitzke, Jaxson Baer, Madeline Haugberg, Elizabeth and Charles Bass, Meredith and Natalie Butler, Zhiva Black, MaKayla and MacKenzie Smith, Kyleigh Duffey, and Maria Nelson; a sister, Marian (Harold) Thomas of Hanska; many nieces and nephews, and cousins, including Ellen Matzke.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, David and Margaret Dackins; her husband, Kenneth; her sisters, Elizabeth Riewe and Elaine Skramstad; her father-in-law and mother in law, Harry and Florence (Kollmann) Duffey; sister-in-law, Joyce (Duffey) Sorenson; son-in-law, Jose Trujillo; infant granddaughter, Grace Ackland; many cousins, uncles and aunts, including Olive Jones and Lillian Jones; and many close friends from the Lake Crystal area.
