THELMA BAKER MOORE was born near Timpson, Shelby County, Texas. She graduated from Timpson High School in 1940 and was married May 24, 1942 in the First Christian Church, Nacogdoches, Texas to Roy Moore. She is survived by husband Roy Moore, son Tommy Moore and wife Jane of Conroe, grandson Geoffrey Moore and wife Chery of Spring, granddaughter Caroline Moore Hobson and husband Michal of Conroe, and great-granddaughter Emma Jane Hobson age 8. Other survivors include 3 sisters, 2 sister-in-laws, and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. Thelma attended Stephen F. Austin State University and completed her BA Degree in Education at the University of Texas Pan American in 1961, Masters of Education Texas A&M Kingsville. A member of Who's Who in American Colleges and University's and graduated Cum Laude. An elementary school teacher for 30 years specializing in Remedial Reading for the second grade and was selected as one of the Outstanding Elementary School Teachers in America in 1975. Honored as Teacher of the Year for the Spring Branch ISD in 1979. She was also chairman of the committee that developed a Social Studies Curriculum for second grade students that is still in use. Chaired the Text Book Committee for second grade reading books, President of the American Association for Childhood Education, President of Alpha Delta Kappa International Organization for Women Educators, a member of American Association of University Women, and was made a lifetime member of the PTA when she retired in 1998. After retirement she was appointed by Federal Judge Black as Foreman of the Federal Grand Jury in Houston and served 18 months. Mrs. Moore was a member of the Lone Star Chapter of American Needlepoint Guild. Her group made Lambrequins for the dinning room at the Piollot House in Sam Houston Park and seat cushions for the Board Room Library at the Lady Bird Johnson National Wild Flower Center in Austin. She most recently was working on a rug project for the Houston Museum of Fine Arts. An active member of the Memorial Drive Christian Church, she served as Deacon, Chairman of the Fellowship Department, Education Department, Minister's Cabinet and taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. Thelma's life was a living example of her strong Christian Faith. She was a good wife, mother, neighbor, teacher, and friend. A memorial Service will be held in her honor at the Memorial Drive Christian Church, 11750 Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77024 at 1:00 PM Saturday May 10, 2008.
