Married Elizabeth Bell Leatham in SLC Utah on March 16, 1898 and had 8 children. He worked on his fahters farm in Illinois during his school years, teen years, and early adult years. He moved to SLC with his brother, Onno Janssen Hofeling (John James) In SLC he worked in Smelters and construction work until he suffered a disabling stroke. After he worked in various merchandising activities until his death. He was also a well-driller and worked in foundries.
As a young man he wore a mustache. During his early years in the smelters he worked to organize a union, which strained his relationship with management
He was 5'8" tall, weighed 150lbs in his prime. With black hair and gray eyes. He suffered from migraine headaches all of his life. He had a great sense of humor, loved reading and music. He was an avid duck hunter and a marvelous fisherman
