Mary Agnes Comer, born September 25, 1895 near Georgetown, IA, one of three daughters and two sons of John Joseph (1859 – 1942) and Mary Agnes (Collins) Comer (1864 – 1946).

On May 9, 1916 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Georgetown, IA, Mary married Daniel James Scieszinski (1892 - 1974), son of Anistasia (1845 - 1941) and Mary Frances (Ciskey) Scieszinski (1853 - 1943). Mary and Dan began their life together on a farm near Melrose, IA and Dan also operated a gas station in Albia, IA before relocating their family to Davenport, IA in 1942.

Dan and Mary raised two sons and two daughters: James Daniel Scieszinski (1917 – 1979), Mary Madonna "Donna" (Scieszinski) Benson (1919 – 2013), John Joseph "Jack" Scieszinski (1923 – 2013) and Elizabeth Regina "Betty" (Scieszinski) Conway (1929 - 2022); had fourteen grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren. Nephew John Arthur Scieszinski (1908 – 1982), eldest child of John Joseph (1884 – 1918) and Teresa (Foley) Scieszinski (1884 – 1916), also lived in their home in Monroe County for a time after first living with his grandparents after his father's death in 1918.

In the Quad Cities Mary worked at the Rock Island Arsenal during World War II and later in the kitchen of Sudlow Jr. High School. Mary will be remembered for her superb cooking and baking skills that were taught to her when she was a young girl by the Georgetown farmers' wives that went from farm to farm cooking for the threshers.

Seventy-eight years old when her husband Dan passed away in 1974, Mary lived independently in Davenport until retiring to Ridgecrest Retirement Village in Davenport where she passed away of old age on October 19, 1983 at the age of eighty-eight.

SCIESZINSKI - COMER

At St. Patrick's church Georgetown Tuesday morning was solemnized the marriage of Miss Mary Comer daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Comer to Daniel Sciezsinski of Melrose. Rev. Father Murphy celebrated the nuptial in the presence of a large company of relatives and friends.

The attending couple was Miss Anna Comer sister of the bride as bridesmaid and Edward Sciezsinski brother of the groom as best man.

After the services the bridal party repaired to the home of the bride's parents Mr. and Mrs. John Comer, where a wedding breakfast was served to a company of the immediate relatives of both families.

The happy young couple have gone to housekeeping on the farm of the groom where everything is in order and where they will be at home to their friends. The marriages unites two of the best families in this vicinity and all extend congratulations and well wishes for their future welfare.

Golden Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Dan Scieszinski, 1718 Bridge Ave., Davenport, will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary Saturday, May 7. Open house will be given by their children from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Elks Club, 215 W. Fourth St., in Davenport. All friends and relatives are invited to attend. The former Mary Comer and Dan Scieszinski were married May 9, 1916, at St. Patrick's Church in Georgetown by the Rev. P.J. Murphy. They made their home in Monroe County until 1942 at which time they moved to Davenport. He was employed by John Deere Plow Works in Moline until his retirement in 1960. Their four children include James and Mrs. Ray Benson, both of Davenport, Jack of Albia, and Mrs. Edward Conway of Newburgh, Ind. There are 12 grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Services for Mary A. Scieszinski, 88, a resident of Ridgecrest Retirement Village, Davenport, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is 2 to 9 p.m. Friday at Halligan - McCabe Funeral Home, where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.

Mrs. Scieszinski died Wednesday at the Village. Mary Comer married Daniel Scieszinski in 1916 in Georgetown, Iowa. He preceded her in death. She was a member of the church's Altar and Rosary Society.

Survivors include daughters, Mrs. Ray (Donna) Benson, Davenport, and Mrs. Edward (Betty) Conway, Newburg, Ind.; a son, Jack, Albia, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Celia Carr, Albia.

Mary A. Scieszinski, 88, of Ridgecrest Retirement Village in Davenport died Oct. 19 at the retirement center. She was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Davenport and of the church's Alter and Rosary Society.

Mary Comer married Daniel Scieszinski in 1916 in Georgetown. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by one son, James.

Surviving are two daughters, Donna Benson of Davenport and Betty Conway of Newburg, Ind.; one son, Jack of Albia; 12 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and one sister, Celia Carr of Albia.

The funeral was 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Davenport. Burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Halligan – McCabe Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
