Commander Robert Gerald Doney, United States Navy, Retired, age 85, died on Monday, February 13, 2012 in Reno, Nevada. Jerry was born Easter Sunday, April 4, 1926 in Warrenton, Oregon, the son of Charles L. and Etta M. Doney. He completed his junior year at Astoria High School in May 1943 and enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve that same month, attending boot camp in Farragut, Idaho. His WWII service was with Fleet Air Wing Two and USS ATR-28.Jerry left the service in December in December 1945, graduated from Astoria High School, then attended the University of Wyoming and Montana State College until he reenlisted in the U.S. Navy in Helena, Montana in October 1947.
From October 1947 until his selection for Officer Candidate School in April 1954, Commander Doney advanced through the enlisted ratings to Quartermaster First Class while serving aboard USS Whetstone (LSD-27), USS Renville (APA-227), USS George Clymer (APA-27) and as a company commander at Bainbridge, Maryland. Noteworthy assignments during this period was the Renville's evacuation of U. S. Marine forces from Tsingtao, China in December, 1949 and George Clymer's participation in a resupply operation to Point Barrow, Alaska in 1949 and in all amphibious operations in Korea 1950-1952.
Upon completion of Officer Candidate School, he was commissioned an ensign on June 15, 1954.
Commander Doney attended the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California receiving a Bachelor of Science degree. He completed the Navy War College Command and Control correspondence course curriculum and was an International Relations student at Tulane University. Commander Doney commanded USS Ashtabula (AO-51). He served as Operations Officer aboard USS Rupertus (DD-851) and USS Sylvania (AFS-2). Other assignments included Anti-submarine Warfare Officer aboard USS Yorktown (CVS-10, Gunnery Officer aboard USS Pacific; Operations staff officer, Military Assistance Command Vietnam; Planning staff officer, Commander-in-Chief Pacific Fleet Staff; Operations staff officer, Commandant Eighth Naval District; and assumed his final military duties as Executive Officer and Commanding Officer, Naval Support Activity New Orleans in 1976. Commander Doney retired June 30, 1980. Commander Doney served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. In addition to various campaign and service medals, he earned the Legion of Merit, two awards of the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, combat Service Medal, Navy Unit commendation Medal and two awards of the Navy Good Conduct Medal. He was a life time member of the Military Officers Association of America, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans.
Preceded in death were his brothers, Ronald and John Paul, and his wife of over 60 years of marriage, Elizabeth (Betty) Doney. He is survived by his sons, Bruce Doney, Joseph Doney, and Brett Doney, his daughters, Jeanette Doney and Barbara Schum, 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, and two brothers, Norman A. Doney and Glenn P. Doney.
There will be no funeral service. Interment will be at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, Point Loma, San Diego, California.
