Veda Johnson, age 96, of Pleasanat Valley, formerly of Sumner, died Tuesday morning, April 23, 2013 at Pleasant Valley Manor Care Center in Pleasant Valley.

A funeral service will be Saturday, April 27, 2013, at 1:00 pm at Wright -Baker-Hill Funeral Home in Brookfield, Missouri. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Sumner. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am and the family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until time for the service.

Veda Mae, daughter of Thomas J and Della Mae (Christmas) Johnson, Jr was born April 20, 1917, in Sumner, Chariton County, Missouri. On June 17, 1939, she married Beverly Hugh Johnson in Chillicothe and he preceded her in death August 8, 1974.

Veda Mae graduated from Sumner High School in 1935 earning the honor of Valedictorian. She lived in Sumner all her life until moving to Pleasant Valley in 2011. She taught school at Locust Creek Country School near Sumner for several years and worked at Walsworth Publishing Company in Marceline for three years. She opened her own quilting business in Suner in 1977, Veda's Quilt Box.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sumner and was very active in church activities. She had served as Tax Collector for Cunningham Township in Chariton County for 34 years. She has served on the Purvis Cemetery Board, the Sumner Community Betterment Board, and the Fulbright Museum Board. She was also a founder of the Pioneer Kitchen in Sumner.

Survivors include one son, Eugen and his wife Maary Lou Johnson; two daughters, Julie and husband Gordon Kemp and Kathy and husband, Victor Monson, weven grandchildren, Kevin Johnson and wife , Anita, Todd Johnson, Eric Johnson and wife Donna, Judy Kemp and husband Rick Carleton, Susan Kemp and husband Michael Shaw, Christopher and Kim Kemp, , and Kate M
She was preceded in death by her parents, a grandson, Ryan Monson, an infant great=grandson, Alex Hugh-Kemp Carleton, four sister, Mabel Johnson Batye, Bessie Johnson, Johnson, Faye Johnson Leaton, and Georgia Johnson Hardubg and one brother, Howard Johnson.
