Wakefield News, WAKEFIELD, KANSAS, WEDNESDAY EVENING, MAY 31st, 1922;
OLDEST RESIDENT HERE DIES
Mrs. Johannette Koerner, who would have been 83 years old Wednesday, the oldest person in Wakefield, passed quietly away at the home of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Philip Koerner, Saturday morning of heart disease and senility after a short illness. The funeral services were held in the Methodist church at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, with burial in Highland cemetery.
Johannette Strack was born in Germany May 31, 1839. At the age of 13 she came with her mother to the United States and settled near Jennings, Ind. In her girlhood days she was converted and united with the German Methodist church of which she remained a member until the time of her death.
On March 2, 1858 she was united in holy matrimony with Joseph Koerner. To this union two sons were born, both of whom have preceded her to the land beyond. Her husband served his country in the Civil War and made the supreme sacrifice in July 1864.
In the fall of 1879 she came west with her two sons and settled on a farm south of Wakefield where they lived together until 1887. She then made her home with her son Philip until his death. Since then she had lived with Mrs. Koerner where she departed this life May 27, 1922 at the age of 82 years, 11 months, 27 days.
She leaves to mourn their loss, her 2 daughters-in-law, 10 grand children, 5 great-grand children and other relatives.
A large circle of friends extend their sympathies to the sorrowing relatives.
