He was a grandson of R. J. Reynolds, founder of R. J. Reynolds Tobacco, Co.; the oldest son of R. J. Reynolds, Jr., and Marianne Byrne O'Brien Reynolds. He was hit by a car as he crossed a street in New Port Richey, Florida, after picking up the morning paper. He was an Army medic in the Vietnam war and self-employed. When he was 21 he inherited $2.5 million. Serving in Vietnam changed him, he battled depression and alcohol dependency. He had various arrests in Florida, where he spent most of his adult life. His brother, Patrick, is an outspoken anti-smoking advocate. The crusade upset some members of their family, but Michael, who smoked, supported Patrick. Despite his hardships, family members described him as a caring, generous man liked by many. He spoke many languages, including Japanese, Russian, Vietnamese, French, and Spanish. Michael was buried with full military honors at the birthplace and boyhood home of his grandfather.
