African Elephant. She was the last of three female elephants who were moved to the Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago from San Diego in 2003. The San Diego Zoo, which owned Wankie, and the American Zoological with the Aquarium Association made the decision to move her to Hogle Zoo, Salt Lake City after her two companions, Peaches, who died in January 2005 and Tatima, died in October 2004, at the Lincoln Park Zoo. Her health began to deteriorate during the journey and when veterinarians had exhausted options to help her, she was euthanized. Animal rights activists had protested the decision to send Wankie to the Salt Lake City zoo but instead to The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee, where she would of had other companionship and better conditions. Zoo officials stated her remains were buried in an undisclosed, secure location. She was only 36 years of age.
