Portuguese Writer. He was born in Póvoa de Varzim and died in Paris. He was a hard critic of the traditional society of his time. He is remembered for his works "A Reliquia," "O Crime do Padre Amaro," "O Primo Basilio," "O Mandarin," "No Mesmo Hotel," "Os Maias" and "A Illustre Casa de Ramires."
