Dorothy Wiersma, 92, of rural Hospers died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001 at the Orange City Hospital.
A funeral service was held on Thursday, Dec. 6 at 10:00 a.m. at the Newkirk Reformed Church, rural Hospers. The Rev. Dennis Hietbrink officiated. Burial followed at Newkirk Cemetery under the direction of the Oolman Funeral Home, Orange City.
Dorothy Johannah was born July 13, 1909, at rural Alton, the daughter of Bert L. and Dena ( Rexwinkel) Van De Berg. She was raised in the Newkirk area and attended Northwestern Junior College in Orange City and Morningside College in Sioux City. She then was a teacher in country schools in Sioux County.
On May 24, 1935, Dorothy married John Wiersma at Maurice. They farmed southeast of Newkirk until 1976 when they retired into Newkirk.
In 1996 they became residents of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. Since May of this year they had lived at Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.
Mrs. Wiersma was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church where she had been a Sunday School teacher for many years. She also participated in the women's organizations of the church, especially the Mission Fellowship. Dorothy enjoyed reading.
Survivors include her husband; three sons and their wives, Gary and Alice Wiersma of Omaha, Neb., Delbert and Audrey Wiersma of Hospers and Wendell and Janet Wiersma of LeMars; eight grandchildren, Joy Ribble, Julie Slykhuis, Denice De Goei, LaRoy Wiersma, John Wiersma, Andrea Grossmann, Michelle Wiersma and Jacquelyn Wiersma; 10 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Wilbert Van De Berg of Hospers and Harold Van De Berg of La Vista, Neb.
She was preceded in death by a daughter in law, Arlene Wiersma and a brother, Lester Van De Berg.
