Herbert A. Bates
Herbert A. Bates, 81, of 220 Richard Ave., Falconer, formerly of 13 Wilson Place, died at 9:30 a.m. Monday (Sept. 17, 1962) in W.C.A. Hospital. He was born Oct. 1, 1880, in Ellington, the son of Cortland and Frances Kinsman Bates.
He had resided in Jamestown for more than 50 years and had been employed as a letter carrier in Jamestown for more than 30 years. Following his retirement he was employed as a custodian at the Winter Garden Theater for many years.
He was a member of First Methodist Church of Jamestown, the National Association of Letter Carriers and was a 50-year member of Chautauqua Aerie 2145, Eagles Lodge of Jamestown.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Albert Becker, Falconer; and a cousin, Claude Crumb, Niobe. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Lucia Lombard Bates, who died in August of 1960.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Powers Funeral Home. Rev. Dr. James McIntosh, pastor of First Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
