Raised in Logan, WV, Ron entered the United States Military Academy at West Point with the Class of 1961, graduating in June of that year. Selecting Infantry as his branch, he spent three tours in Vietnam, where he was awarded three Bronze Star Medals, the first two for valor.

Ron's gravestone states that he was awarded the Silver Star, which may be in error. According to the Register of Graduates, USMA, there is no record that Ron was awarded the Silver Star, but he did receive the Soldier's Medal, an equivalent award for heroism by risking one's life to save another, not involving actual conflict with an enemy.

Ron earned a Master of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Alabama in 1969. He retired from the Army in 1983 as a Lieutenant Colonel. After his retirement, he had a second career in business management with the school system of Anne Arundel County, MD.

Well done, Ron. Be thou at peace.
