At the age of 20 Elizabeth married James Knox, Sr. The couple emigrated from Scotland to Ballymoney, County Antrim, Ireland in 1752 and the first 10 of their children were born there.
In 1767, James and Elizabeth immigrated to the American colonies to claim lands provided thru the Bounty Act in Chester County, South Carolina. They sailed with their 10 children from Belfast Harbor in March 1767, aboard the Earl of Hillsborough. Elizabeth gave birth to her eleventh child, Susan, during the voyage. The family landed at Charleston, South Carolina on May 27, 1767 and settled in that community and gave birth to their twelfth and final child there. James Knox was Justice of the Peace in Chester District until his death in 1787.
In the spring of 1788, Elizabeth, then 69, migrated to Crab Orchand, Madison County, Kentucky with her son, Samuel and other members of their family.
Finally, in the spring of 1812 Elizabeth, then 93 years old, was brought from Kentucky to Duck River, Bedford County, Tennessee to live with some of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She died there in 1822 at the age of 103.
