James Rufus Nalley's mother was Mary McDaniel (sometimes listed as McDaniels), not Mahaley Elizabeth Clenden as found in some family trees. This is confirmed by James' birth & death certificates and the fact that Berry married Elizabeth Clenden a year after James was born.

Very little is known about James' mother except that she & Berry Benson Nalley married in McMinn county Tennessee on February 11, 1877. James' parents separated right after he was born in 1882.

His mother, Mary McDaniel, re-married in 1890 to James Madison Huffman. His father, Berry Benson Nalley, re-married about 1883 to Mahaley Elizabeth Clenden.

Given that James Rufus Nalley was born in October of 1882 and the 1900 census has Berry Benson Nalley and his 2nd wife, Mahaley Elizabeth Clenden as married for 18 years, evidence suggests that Mary McDaniel would have been born about 1860.

James Nalley worked at the Estelle iron mines in Estelle, Walker county Georgia. His daughters Zella & Della married brothers Jess & John Lee, who also worked at the iron mines. After moving from Estelle to Chattanooga, he worked at the Chattanooga Sash and Millwork Company.
