GRANDMA ARNOLD, PIONEER WOMAN, BURIED THURSDAY
Friends were saddened on Monday when it was learned that Mrs. Catherine Arnold had passed away at her home on C. Street. She was born at Straffordshire, Wolverhampton, England, April 1, 1855, daughter of William and Anne McDermott Dolan. At the age of twenty, she, with a younger sister, sailed from Liverpool, England, in August 1874, and were three weeks in crossing. She went to Pueblo, Colo., and made her home with a brother. On January 15, 1881, she married A.M. Arnold, later moving to Washington, and in 1884 came to Oregon. They first settled on Halls Creek, then moved above Powers to what was then known as Rural. In 1910 they moved to Myrtle Point, where they made their home. Mr. Arnold died Dec. 26, 1927. She is survived by six children: Mrs. Eva Carver, Sutherlin, Ore.; Mrs. Elizabeth Spencer, Reedsport; Mrs. Nellie Sanborn, Yakima, Wash; Mrs. Nita Wilson, Myrtle Point; two sons, John and Richard, of Myrtle Point; 18 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren. One boy and two girls passed away after reaching majority, while one boy died at the age of 13. Wednesday afternoon she lay in state in the Schroeder chapel and the rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Final services were held on Thursday morning, at 11, from St. Ann's Catholic church, Rev. Father Kelley reading the mass. Mrs. Arnold was a devout catholic and active in all the activities of the church and Altar Society. She was indeed the ideal mother, none knew her without gaining much from her, both in a spiritual and material way. Her ready wit and friendly interest in everything made her home a mecca for a large circle of friends and neighbors. Interment was in the Norway cemetery.
