Ralph L. Howes, 87, farmer, civic leader
Ralph L. Howes, 87, of 198 Steady Lane, a farmer and local civic leader, died Tuesday in a Shelburne nursing home.
He started farming with his father, the late Raymond G. Howes. They operated a dairy farm, and grew apples and raised hogs.
After his father's death in 1958, Howes and his brothers, Emory G. and Merton E., formed their own farm, the Howes Bros. partnership. They operated the farm until it was sold in 1988.
The decedent was supervisor of the Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation District for 14 years, and served as chairman for five years. He was vice president of the Massachusetts Association of Conservation Districts for two years, a director of the Northampton Cooperative Auction for 30 years, and a member of the Rating Committee of Tenney Farms Dairy for two years.
From 1963 to 1981, Howes was an Ashfield selectman, and was chairman of the board from 1965 to 1971. He was also a member of the Board of Health and the Finance Committee.
From 1963 to 1968, he was a member of the Board of Public Welfare, and from 1963 to 1975 on the Board of Assesors.
He was a director of Conway Savings Bank.
A lifelong resident here, he was a 1924 graduate of Sanderson Academy. He was a volunteer with Boy Scout Troop 18, and chaired its committee for several years.
He was a 20-year deacon at First Congregational Church.
His wife, the former Grace E. Barnes, died in 1986.
He leaves his brothers, two daughters, Doris E. Howes of Shelburne Falls and Muriel H. Cranson of Ashfield; a sister, Margaret Birkett of Pownal, Vt.; six grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
A son, Elwin R., died last year.
A memorial service will be conducted Sunday afternoon in the church, with burial in Hill Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home of Shelburne Falls is in charge.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Town Hall restoration fund, in care of Susan McGowan of 250 West Road, Ashfield, 01330.
