Eugene Broyles "Jeep" Jones Sr., 95, 901 Lake Drive, Johnson City, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Appalachian Christian Village.
Mr. Jones was a descendant of two 1770's pioneer families of this section, the Joneses and Broyles. He was a native of Washington County and the son of the late Thomas Franklin and Nellie Broyles Jones. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Thomas F. Jones, and a sister, Mary Nelle Regan.
Living most of his life in Johnson City, he attended Science Hill High School and was a graduate of Randolph Macon Military Academy and Milligan College. He was the dean of East Tennessee Broadcast Engineers, and had more than 55 years experience in the broadcast field. He designed the initial installation of broadcast equipment for, and was employed by WDUK, Durham, N.C., WETB, Johnson City, and WETS-FM, East Tennessee State University. He was also an engineer at WJHL Radio, Johnson City. He retired from WETS in 1977 and had retired earlier from WETB in 1972. As a pioneer in the broadcast industry, he witnessed its growth from a few scattered stations to what we enjoy today.
Mr. Jones was a member of Central Baptist Church. He had been a licensed Amateur Radio operator since 1930 (W4AOY). He built the first two-way radio for the police department in Carter County in 1929, and in the 1930s he built the two-way police radio for Johnson City. He was a member of the Johnson City Radio Club and MARS (Military Affiliated Radio System).
Survivors include his wife, Ruth T. Jones, Johnson City; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Eugene Broyles "Gene" Jr. and Joy Cayton Jones, Jacksonville, N.C., Frank F. and Anne Jones, Virginia Beach, Va., Kenneth Edward Jones, Falls Church, Va., and Robert Lawrence "Larry" and Debra Smith Jones, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia; eight grandchildren, Darren Buchanan, Dr. ReVonda Grayson, Jennifer Fulbright, Neal Jones, Aaron Jones, Lori Jones, Caroline Jones and Ariana Jones; three great-grandchildren, Taylor and Lindsey Fulbright and Zefram Nichols; one niece and four nephews.
The Celebration of Life Service for Mr. Jones was held at 8 p.m. Saturday, August 2, in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral & Cremation Services with the Rev. R. Willard Warfield officiating. Music was under the direction of Mrs. Brenda Pelham. Visitation began at 6 p.m. and continued until the service time on Saturday.
The graveside and committal service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, August 3, at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Everyone is asked to meet at the funeral home by 2:15 p.m. Sunday to go in procession to the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Herman Tester, Mark Nichols, Neal Jones, Aaron Jones, Richard Tester, Doyle Tester, Clarence Dickens and C.V. Jayne.
