William was the son of John Russell and Margaret Ann Moar Harper.

The family was found in the 1891 Scotland and Wales Census in Rousay, Orkney. The household was enumerated as follows:

John Russell Father Male 53 Orkney
Margaret Russell Mother Female 43 Orkney
Lydia Russell Sister Female 15 Orkney
Jane Russell Sister Female 13 Orkney
Margaret Russell Sister Female 11 Orkney
Mary Jane Russell Sister Female 10 Orkney
John Russell Brother Male 9 Orkney
Annie Russell Sister Female 8 Orkney
Wm Russell Male 5 Orkney
James Russell Brother Male 2 Orkney
Catherine Russell Sister Female 0 Orkney

According to a letter hand written and left by Renee McDonald's Mother: ..."he left Orkney aged 16 and went to Glasgow where he trained as a butcher. He married the boss' daughter Harriet ?. Then went to Montreal. He joined the Canadian forces when the War started as butcher and cook. Based somewhere in the north of Scotland, he spent all his leaves with his sister, Catherine (known as Kitty - that's 'my' (Renee's) granny) at Runa, in Orkney. Both William's sons were in the RAF but never visited Orkney. William's son Ken married a Welsh girl, Eva ? (Grantham). but she couldn't settle in Canada and left him with their two daughter and returned home to Wales. No information on other son Bill, or his daughter Lilian. You'll maybe know how accurate this is. I've not gone down the road of looking for certificates etc., as I've been concentrating on my granny's line and one of her uncles who had an unexpectedly different life from the farming activities of most of the men in that he became a high glass [sic] grocer with a very fancy shop."

He married Harriette Alice Harriette Thompson (also known as Muirhead).
