Charles Ballantyne was a manufacturer who served in the Canadian 13th Light Scottish Dragoons, Sixth Fusiliers Infantry, in the 1890s. The elder Ballantyne also served as a senator.
James had three siblings: Charles Trenholme (1902-1966), Murray Gordon (b. 1909) and Linda Trenholme.
On Feb. 5, 1930, James married Mary "Molly" Elizabeth Fletcher Meigs, daughter of Walter Meigs (b. 1874) and Louise Boulter (1879-1964). Molly's mother and aunt, Mary Olive Boulter, were nurses serving in England and France during World War I.
James and Molly had two children: James Michael and Linda Trenholme (Mrs. Bruce Fleming). Following a divorce, James married Hazel Marion Shaughnessy on Oct. 3, 1938 in Montreal. Hazel was the daughter of Lord William James Shaughnessy and Marion Graham.They also had two children: Marion Graham and Willian Gordon.
James Ballantyne was educated at Lower Canada College and McGill University. He joined Canadian Industries Ltd. and later co-founded Craig, Ballantyne & Co. At the time of his death he was partner and director of Kingston and MacKenzie Investments.
During World War II James Ballantyne served with the Canadian Black Watch as a captain with the 2nd Battalion.
