James probably came from Amherst County, Va.
He was in the Surry and Stokes county area as early as Dec. 1778.

In Oct. 1802 James made his Will in Stokes County, N.C.
(Will Book 2, page 70)
His son Tandy was to receive the home tract of 248 acres on the Town Fork along with 600 acres and a 100 acre tract on Belew's Creek.
His son-in-law Joseph Hollingsworth received a 600 acre tract along with the mansion house called "Stone Chimneys"

A 900 acre tract known by the name of "Walnut Cove" located in the lower end of Powell's Valley was to be sold and the money was to be held in trust for Jame's grand children, the children of Elizabeth Matthews James.
