Ernest was born in Montreal to John James Manuel and Priscilla née Wright, both originally from Newfoundland. He was the eldest of four children, Albert Charles, Jessie Pearl, and Florence Laura. He worked mostly for the CPR Canadian Pacific Railroad in administrative management capacities. Characterised as a kind, soft spoken man, musical, loved books and reading. He spent the last year or so of his life in a sanitarium to help him get well through an illness. Shortly after he returned home, he died suddenly of heart failure. Together with his wife Adeline Elisabeth née Jessome, they had at least three sons, possibly four, but Ernest raised all six sons as his own.
