Richard Custer, 87 years, of Dundee, died Saturday, April 20th, at Medilodge of Monroe. Friends may call at the Capaul Funeral Home, Ida, Thursday, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Services will be at the funeral home Friday, April 26, 2013, at 1:00 PM. Rev. James McCourt, Pastor of Summerfield Baptist Chapel, will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Petersburg.
Born June 20, 1924, in Toledo, Ohio, Richard was the son of Louis and Mary (Passe) Custer. A 1942 Summerfield High School graduate, Richard enlisted in the US Navy, serving from 1943 to 1946 and received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Battle Star, the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon with one Battle Star, the Victory Medal, and the American Theater Ribbon. He married Ruth Gable, September 25, 1949, in Petersburg. A line worker for GM Hydramatic for 28 years, he retired in 1985. Richard also farmed for many years. He was a member of Lynn C. Weeman American Legion Post 514, the Summerfield VFW Post 6509, the UAW Local 12, Toledo, and loved watching Wheel of Fortune,The Price is Right, and Cash Explosion.
Survivors include: his wife, Ruth; daughters, Lynnette Marie Custer, Karen Sue Gerth; brothers, James (MaryLou), Melcher; grandchildren, Andrew, Aaron, and Paige. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.
