Paul Edward Lear passed peacefully on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at the Hospice Unit of North Colorado Medical Center. Paul was born on July 12, 1924 at the family farm east of Ault, Colorado. He grew up in Ault and graduated from Ault High School in 1943.
He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp in June 1943 and served as a Corporal, 3rd Division on Iwo Jima where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart. He received an Honorable Discharge one month before the end of World War II. Paul returned home to help on the family farm.
On December 23, 1947 Paul married Doris Graff, the love of his life, in Denver. They celebrated 63 years together before she passed in February of this year. They will spend their 64th anniversary together.
Paul worked for the Town of Ault as the Town Clerk in the 1950s, and then drove a bulk route truck for Conoco until the family moved to Washington State in 1960 to farm with his brother Harold Lear. They returned from Washington in 1962. Paul was a house painter until he started to work for the Colorado State Highway Department, where he continued to work until his retirement in 1985.
Paul is preceded in death by his parents; eleven brothers and sisters; and two brothers-in-law. He was the last immediate member of the John and Christina Lear family.
