Joseph Nagel Dies In Oregon July 18

Rites At Lebanon, S.D., Last Wednesday For Early Remsen Settler
Funeral services were held last Wednesday [July 25th] at Lebanon, S.D., for Joseph Nagel, 81, prominent farmer south of Remsen [Iowa] in the early days and until he moved to South Dakota 46 years ago.

Mr. Nagel died July 18 at Sheridan, Ore., where he made his home with a son in law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Gutgrod [?], since his retirement from farm life five years ago.

Born June 13, 1870, in Wurttenburg, Germany, the son of Martin and Ann Marie Nagel, he with his sister Barbara came to this country and directly to Marcus [Iowa] in 1888.

Choosing a suitable farming area southeast of Remsen the brother and sister beckoned their parents and others of the family, who followed them in the next year.

The family remained here many years, the parents both passing on while still on the farm but gradually the brothers and sisters parted although three of them still live in this community. They are Mrs. August Steffen, Mrs. Phillip Dorr and Mrs. Herman Letsche.

In 1895 Joseph Nagel still farming here, married Babette Allinger, the marriage taking place in Christ Lutheran church here. The couple continued to farm here for 10 years and Mr. Nagel with his brother Adam, during most of those years operated a steam threshing outfit throughout this community in addition to their farming activities.

In 1905 the Joseph Nagel family moved to a farm near Lebanon. Joseph continued to farm until 1946 when he accepted the invitation to make his home with the Gutbrods [?] in Oregon.

Mr. and Mrs. Nagel were the parents of six children. A son died in infancy; another son, Joseph, died at the age of 21 years.

Surviving are four daughters: Mrs. Roland Jacobi, Cleveland, Wis.; Mrs. Guthrod [?], and Mrs. Alfred Nagel and Mrs. Marie Anderson, both of Gettysburg, S.D. Besides the three sisters living here, surviving are his sisters: Mrs. Christian Stegeman of Holstein, Iowa, and Mrs. George Doerr of Plainview, Nebr.

Mr. Nagel was a charter member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran congregation at Lebanon and in his zeal for his church for a number of years served as an elder.

Funeral services at Lebanon Wednesday were attended by Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Dorr and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Letsche.
