Six aircrew members were killed when their Vickers Wellington Mk.X LP397 aircraft crashed. The aircraft was on a cross country exercise from RAF Castle Donington, in Leicestershire; 25 minutes after it took off it encountered a thunderstorm and this resulted in the Wellington’s crashing near the village of Mayfield in Staffordshire and the loss of all on board.
The six airmen who perished in this accident were:-
RCAF Flying Officer George David Wills BUCHANAN,
RCAF William Corley DAVIS,
RAFVR Sergeant William George PATERSON,
RAF Flying Officer Joseph STARR,
RCAF Sergeant James Joseph STEVENS and
RCAF Sergeant Richard James TAYLOR.

Age: 29
Flying Officer Joseph Starr is commemorated on Page 451 of Canada's Second World War Book of Remembrance.
