"WAR VETERAN LAID TO REST
AMERICAN LEGION POST TAKES PART IN RITES FOR A. SAMPSON SUNDAY

Funeral services for Roland's last Civil War veteran, A. Sampson, who died Wednesday last week, were held Sunday afternoon, there being a large number of people present. A short service was held at the residence at 2 o'clock followed by the service in Bergen church at 2:30 and at the cemetery. Rev. M. O. Sumstad officiated and preached the funeral sermon in the Norwegian language, and also spoke a few words at the close of the service in English. A vocal solo was rendered by Casper Jerdeman.

Roland Post 307 of the American Legion took part in the service with the post colors, firing squad and pall bearers, and the war veteran was laid to rest with military honors. The local post was assisted by the post from Zearing, who sent over a number of their members on invitation of Commander C.A. Fagerland. Dr. J. A. Snyder was in command of the squad and Bugler Casper Thompson sounded taps. Post Chaplain Joseph O. Johnson, read from the ritual of the Legion at the grave in the Roland cemetery.

With the passing of Mr. Sampson, Roland lost its last veteran of the Civil War. For a number of years two veterans lived side by side on the same street, Mr. Sampson and C. Logan, but since the death of Mr. Logan on October 11, 1926, Mr. Sampson was the only man left in Roland who saw service in that conflict. There is now no one left in Roland and only one in Howard township, Roy Sheffield, who lives in the southwest corner of the township.

Obituary
A. Sampson was born February 2, 1845, at Helvig, Kvinherred, near Stavanger, Norway, and died at this home in Roland, August 14, 1929, at the age of 84 years, 6 months and 12 days.

He emigrated to the United States in 1861 coming to Grand Mound, Iowa, and the following year at the age of 17 years, he enlisted in the Union forces. He was assigned to Company A, 21st Iowa Infantry, Volunteers, with which company he served for three years, being mustered out on June 10, 1865. In a published history of the regiment, it is recorded that Mr. Sampson took part in the battles of Hartville, port Gibson, Champion's Hill, Black River Bridge, seiges of Vicksburg, Jackson, Spanish Fort and Blakely, and Mobile.

After getting his discharge, he returned to Grand Mound in April, 1872, he was united in marriage to Caroline Twedt at Roland. They moved to this community in 1875, having purchased a farm southeast of town, which he still owned. In 1897 his wife died, and the following year he moved to Roland, where he since resided. Four children were born to this union, Mrs. Carrie Helvig, who died in 1918, Mrs. Christine Mathison of Roland, Sarah who died at the age of 14, and John E. Sampson of Roland.

He was married again in the fall of 1902 to Mrs. Alice Johnson, who survives him and gave him care during his declining years and the illness preceding his death. He had been confined to his home for many months and had been bedridden for several weeks. His last appearance in public was on Decoration Day when he sat on the lawn and watched the parade pass by. The parade stopped in the street as it passed that day and the band played a number.

Besides his widow and his two children and 5 great grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Annie Sime of Radcliffe, and five brothers, Iver Sampson of Roland, Sam Sampson of McCallsburg, Chris Sampson of Radcliffe, Ole Helvig of Butterfield, Minn., and Oscar Sampson of Garden City."
