"PIONEER CITIZEN AND SOLDIER DEAD

Ole O. Hegland was born on the farm Hegland in Skonevigs prestegjaeld, the 12th day of June, 1833 and died the 29th of March, 1917, and had at that time attained the ripe old age of nearly 79 years.

In 1857, when he was 19 years of age he came to this country with his parents, who spent the first years at Lisbon, Ill. When the Civil War broke out Mr. Hegland and his brother, S. O. volunteered in the same regiment and served until the end of the war.

Soon after he came to Iowa where his parents had been for some time. In 1868 he married Miss Ingeborg Johnson, who, with 8 children survive their husband and father. Ten children were born, of which eight survive. They are: Mrs. Myrah of Story City; Mrs. A. M. Henderson of Story City; Mrs. B. M. Rasmussen, now of Gottenborg, Sweden, the only one of the children who was not at the bedside of her father; Attorney Martin Hegland of Rosseau, Minn.; Mrs. Fred E. Hanson of Nevada; Mrs. O. S. Boyd of Roland; Mrs. Enlow of Quincy, Ill.; and Miss Agnes Hegland of Roland.

Had Mr. Hegland lived until the seventh day of March next year he and his wife would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

They spent their early wedded life on the farm one mile north of Roland and about twenty years ago moved to Roland. He was a member of the St. Petri congregation until the Bergen congregation was formed here. He was a much respected and trustworthy member of that church until his death. It was not many times that he was not at church.

Like the many other pioneers Mr. Hegland was blessed with a robust health. It was not until about five years ago, when he underwent an operation, that he began to fail. Ever after he had never been in the best of health.

With the passing of Mr. Hegland this community has lost one of its best men.

The RECORD extends to the sorrowing wife and children of the deceased their sympathy."
