Served in the Army in Germany during WWI. He enlisted 17 Jun 1918 at Paris, KY, served in 162 Co Railway Transportation Corps, and was discharged 22 Jul 1920 at Camp Taylor, KY due to demobilization. As result of having pulmonary tuberculosis and chronic hemorrhoids, he was admitted to the U.S. National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Dayton, Ohio, 29 Jun 1921. His health was restored and he was discharged 9 Nov 1921.

Married Edna B. Sosby Dec. 22, 1922, Carlisle, Nicholas County, Kentucky.
