"Les was born November 26, 190 at Edgar, Nebraska the son of Joseph G. And Mamie (Booker) Atkins. He grew up in Clay and Custer Counties in Nebraska and graduated from high school in Arnold, Nebraska. He attended the Scottsbluff Junior College for two years before he joined the Air Forces during WWII. Following his military service he work for two different banks in Broken Bow, Nebraska. in 1950 he moved to Gering, Nebraska where he worked for the Gering National Bank. On March 5, 1950 he married Mary Lou (Mosley) at Scottsbluff, Nebraska. In 1961 Mr. Atkins, along with two partners, purchased controlling interest of First National Bank in Torrington, Wyoming. He was named Chief Executive Officer of the bank, a position he help until his death.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church at Torrington. Mr. Atkins was very active in community and banking organizations. He helped organize and was a charter member of the Lions Club in Broken Bow. He also helped orgainze and was a chair member of the Gering Jaycees, later serving as Vice-President, President and Director. He served one year as the State Extension Chairman of the Nebraska Jaycees. Les was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge at Scottsbluff. He was a member of the Travis Snow Post #5 of the American Legion in Torrington. From 1964 to the present he has been a director of the Eastern Wyoming College Foundation. He served as a director of the Torrington Chamber of Commerce. He had been chairman of the committee to recruit additional medical doctors to Torrington. Les had served as president of the Torrington Industrial Development Corporation. In1973 he was appointed by Governor Hathaway to be a director of the Wyoming State Department of Economics Planning and Development and he served as chairman for one year. Mr. Atkins had served as chairman of the Wyoming Bankers Association Agriculture Committee and at the time of his death was serving on the Agriculture Committee of the Independent Bankers Association of America. He had also served as an Advisory Board Member of the Regional Office of the Comptroller of Currency.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou of Torrigton, two daughters Kathryn Smith of Jerome, ID and Janice Atkins of Boise, ID, two brothers, Andy Atkins of North Platte, NE and Roy Atkins of Halsey, NE, three sisters, Mabel Reed of Arnold, NE, Hazel Atkins and Marie Deterding both of North Platte, NE, one half-brother, J.H. Atkins of Lutrell, TN, two half sisters, Dorothy Pursifel and Elizabeth Allen, both of Lutrell and by three grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother."
