DEATHS AND FUNERALS
Andrew Jackson Hartenbower
Andrew Jackson Hartenbower, 67, a pioneer settler near Orlando, and a long-time resident of Stillwater, died at his home, 1102 Lowry street, at 3 o'clock Tuesday morning, April 24, 1923, of cancer, following an illness of about a year. He had been confined to his bed five weeks, and was not conscious two days preceding his death.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon, at St. Andrew's Episcopal church, the Rev. Benjamin Bean, of Pawnee, officiating. The pall-bearers were Knights Templar - E.E. Good, Hary Jones, W.H. Wilcox, Ray Jones, T.W. Kelly and D.E. Jones. A choir composed of Messrs. J.W. Brigham, J.J. Patterson, Misses Elizabeth Morehardt and Nita Holmes, sang, with Mrs. Claude H. Carter at the organ. Not more than one-fifth of the persons present at the church were able to get in. At the conclusion of the church service the choir sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," and preceding the minister in the recessional continued to sing until the casket was placed in the hearse. At the grave in Fair Lawn cemetery the ritual Masonic services were held.
Mr. Hartenbower, known by his intimates as "Jack," was a man of many estimable traits of character. His friends and acquaintances were number by the score. He was known not only in Payne county and neighboring counties, but also in many sections of the state. He was prominently identified with the welfare and progress of the city, county and state. For two terms he was county clerk, in Stillwater; he served as secretary of the county free fair association a few years ago; for ten years he was president of the Stillwater board of education; he represented Payne county in the Sixth Oklahoma legislature; he was for many years a vestryman of St. Andrew's Episcopal church, and was a Knight Templar Mason and member of the Woodmen and Knights of Pythias lodges.
Mr. Hartenbower was a merchant in Stillwater many years, being in the hardware business with T.I. Roberson, and later with T.W. Kelly. His last occupation was that of proprietor of the Model grocery.
Mr. Hartenbower was born May 21, 1856, at Marion, Minn. He was married to Miss Katie McCarthy in Pueblo, Colo., April 30, 1883. In 1889 he settled with his family at Orlando, where he was editor of the Orlando Clipper. He moved to Stillwater in 1900 and had lived here continuously since that time.
Mr. Hartenbower is survived by his wife and three children, all of whom were in Stillwater at the time of his death. The children are A. Cleveland Hartenbower, of Perry; John Hartenbower, of Red Rock; and Mrs. Doane A. Farr, of Clinton. A grand-daughter is little Mary Katherine Farr. He has three sisters and three brothers living, most of whom are expected to come to Stillwater for the funeral services. They are Mrs. Julia Walker, of Des Moines, Io.; Mrs. Allie Kays, of McNabb, Ill.; Mrs. Carrie Carpenter, of Henry, Ill.; George Hartenbower, of Chicago, Ill.; Alvin Hartenbower, of Mulvane, Kan.; and John Hartenbower, of Neosho Rapids, Kan.
