The son of John & Catherine Ann (Bowers) Knaub, in 1860 he was a shoemaker living in Manchester Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had brown hair and blue eyes. He married Sarah A. Peters and fathered Amanda (b. 07/16/61, d. 07/21/61) and Emma J. (b. 11/12/68).

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Manchester Township March 18, 1865, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg March 24 as a private with the 103rd Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. D, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865.

In 1890, he lived in what by then had become East Manchester Township where he died from "chronic cardio-renal disease."
