Mary Beth Terry Powell, 92, of Little Rock died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998.
Born Oct. 15, 1905, in Prescott, she was the daughter of the late Laura Johnson Terry and George Jefferson Terry. She was educated in Batesville Public Schools and graduated from Batesville High School in 1922. She attended Galloway College (now Hendrix College) and later transferred to the University of Arkansas where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She graduated from Arkansas College (now Lyon College) in Batesville.
In 1930 she moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the Federal Housing Association. She later returned to Batesville where she lived for the next 50 years. She was the head librarian at the Independence County Regional Library, served as president of the Arkansas State Librarians, was a longtime secretary of the Batesville Country Club and was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Margaret Terry Rasco Dearing of Little Rock; a sister-in-law, Fannie Terry Richards of Alexandria, Va.; a stepdaughter, Lisa P. Dempsey of Westford, Mass.; four nephews, Jim Rasco and Terry Rasco, both of Little Rock, Jeff Terry of Atlanta and Howie Terry of Alexandria, Va.; a niece, Lucy Terry Rutkowski of Pflugerville, Texas; 10 great-nephews and nieces; and four great-great-nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Adm. Morgan Allen Powell; a son, Lt. Charles Howard Griffith; and two brothers, George Jefferson Terry Jr. and Howard Leroy Terry.
The graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at Oaklawn Cemetery in Batesville.
Visitation will be from noon until service time on Thursday at the Handford-Terry House, 658 Boswell.
Memorials may be made to the Independence County Regional Library, 368 East Main, Batesville, AR 72501.
