Harriett Bennett Hasty, age 87, was born on April 24, 1925, at Jefferson, Iowa, the daughter of H.F. and Maureen (Barr) Bennett. She attended school in Sioux City and Odebolt, Iowa. She graduated from Odebolt in 1943 and then attended business school in Omaha, Nebraska and became a telegrapher on the Union Pacific Railroad in Wyoming. She served as a depot agent in Kison, Cushing, Gowrie and Breda, Iowa.

On March 30, 1945, Harriett was married to Orval V. Hasty of Gowrie, Iowa in El Centro, California. The couple returned to Iowa living in Ames, Quad Cities and came to Parkersburg in 1950. To this union three daughters were born, Carol, Gail and Becky. Harriett was active in Women's Circle and Methodist Church Circle, where she served as past president of both.

Harriett later studied at UNI in Cedar Falls and also studied with well known artists in workshops through the years. She belonged to All Iowa Artists Group and won many blue ribbons in their regional shows and 2 blue ribbons in their state shows. She also belonged to the Iowa Watercolor Inc. where she became a signature member.

Harriett enjoyed nature and her grandchildren, spending much time with them and her daughters at her lake cabin in northern Minnesota. She and her husband enjoyed the Minnesota cabin, golf, fishing and traveling in the camper van.

Harriett died Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Grundy Center, Iowa, of natural causes.

She was preceded in death by her husband Orval; a daughter, Carol Johnson and her husband Mike; her parents, H.F. and Maureen Bennett; and one brother, Bob Bennett.

Harriett is survived by two daughters, Gail (Jim) Hartman of Lenox, Iowa and Becky (Leon) Thorne of Parkersburg; eight grandchildren: Mike (Lakesha) Johnson, Alex Johnson, Blayne (Amy) Hartman, Donny (Sheri) Hartman, Megan (Jake) Heesch, Dustin Thorne, Hayley (Sean) Foster and Brynn (Kayleigh) Thorne. There are also 17 great grandchildren; and one step-great granddaughter.

The quote from Winslow Homer "The sun will not rise or set without my notice and thanks" personifies Harriett's lifelong sentiment.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday April 20, 2013, at the Parkersburg United Methodist Church with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, both in Parkersburg.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, (319)346-1534, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
