Philip A. McCutcheon, 77, former mayor of Sayreville

SAYREVILLE – Philip A. McCutcheon of Washington Road, a former mayor and borough councilman, died yesterday at South Amboy Memorial Hospital at the age of 77. He was born in Sayreville and lived there all his life. Before retiring 19 years ago, Mr. McCutcheon was a pump operator for 31 years at the E.I. DuPont de Nemours Fabrics and Finishings Division, Parlin section of Sayreville. He was a member of the company's 25-Year Club. He served as a borough councilman from 1938 to 1944 and as mayor of Sayreville from 1945 to 1950. After his term as mayor, he was the borough's tax assessor until 1963. Mr. McCutcheon was an organizer and charter member of the Sayreville Emergency Squad, of which he was a member from 1936 to the present. He also was a member of Knights of Columbus Our Lady of Victories Council 2061, Sayreville, an honorary member of Sayreville Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post 4699 and of the Sayreville Fire Department. Mr. McCutcheon was a member of the Sayreville Senior Citizens' Wednesday Club and Leisure Club. He was a former nominee of the Sayreville VFW as "Citizen of the Year." Mr. McCutcheon was a communicant of Our Lady of Victories R.C Church, Sayreville. His first wife, Frances Mioduszewski McCutcheon, died in 1969. Surviving are his wife, Edwina Sadowski Pejka McCutcheon; a son, Sgt. Philip Jr. of the Sayreville Police Department; a daughter, Marian Slesinski Gregoire of the Parlin section of Sayreville; two stepdaughters, Janice Grabowski of New Egypt and Gloria Wolfe of Sayreville; and 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be Monday at 9 a.m. at the Maliszewski Memorial Home, 121-123 Main St., Sayreville, followed by a 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Victories R.C. Church. Burial will follow at New Calvary Cemetery, Sayreville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sayreville Emergency Squad.
