AMHERST- Nettie Mae Schmidt (nee: Schaeffer), 91 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Friday, December 3, 2010 at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain.

She was born May 25, 1919 in Amherst, Ohio. Nettie was a lifetime resident of Amherst and graduated from Amherst Central High School in the class of 1937.

Nettie was a loving housewife and mother, devoted grandmother and great grandmother. In 1960's, she was employed as a store clerk at the Ben Franklin Five and Dime in Amherst and she also worked and retired from the Amherst Public Library.

Nettie was a former officer and member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Amherst Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie #1442 as well as member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Amherst VFW post 1662. She was also a member of the Amherst Women Democrat Society as well as the Amherst Historical Society. She loved being with people, engaging with her family and the commmunity whenever possible.

In 1991 Nettie suffered a stroke which left her restricted in her activities, but she still enjoyed getting out to see others. She was affectionately known and called "Grandma Dee Dee". Nettie leaves to cherish her memory her daughter and her husband Barbara and Tim Shimer of Amherst; her grandchildren, Tim Shimer, Jr., Libby Adkins and her husband James. Ted Shimer and his wife Lisa; her great grandchildren, Carrie Puhalla and her husband Joe, Blair Adkins and Jim Adkins and her sister Ruby Francis of Florida,along with many nieces and nephews and extended family.

She was preceded in daeth by her husband of sixty-one years Theodore George Schmidt on December 24, 1999; her brothers Earl Schaeffer, Slip Schaefer and her sisters, Florence Mulder, Grace Grove; and her parents Michael and Mayme Schaeffer (nee-Stiwald).

Friends may call Wednesday, December 8, 2010 from 5-8 pm. at Hempel Funderal hime; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 9, 2010 at 11:00 am. from the funeral home. The Rev. Mark Pemberton, pastor of St. Peter United Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will be Crown Hill Cemetery, Amherst.
