David Roland Goldthorpe, 79, of Amherst, the first judge of the Oberlin Municipal Court, died Wednesday morning at his home. Born in Cleveland, he attended schools in Lorain, New York City and Stony Point, New York. He graduated from Lorain High School in 1932. After graduation, he worked summers for City Ice and Fuel Co., in Elyria and Lakewood, driving trucks. Mr. Goldthorpe attended Fenn College. He worked his way through Cleveland Law School by taking jobs such as hospital orderly, chauffeur, laborer at American Ship ad national Tube, in Lorain. Pipe mill clerk and service supervisor at the Bomber Plant in Cleveland and Bendix-Westinghouse in Elyria. He opened a Law office in Amherst in 1946 and was elected Justice of The Peace in Amherst Township in 1945, serving for 12 years. Mr. Goldthorpe served as Judge of Oberlin Municipal Court for 18 years, retiring in 1975. He served as acting judge to that court from 1976-1983. Previously he had served assignments in Parma, Medina, Huron, Cleveland and Ashland Courts, and never had a decision successfully appealed.
While in high school, he was a Boy Scout columnist for the Lorain Times Herald and later for the Lorain Journal. He was in every leadership position in local Boy Scouts, Inc. Council. President of the Firelands Area Council from 1964-1966, and Outstanding Citizen Award in 1979. He has received two Distinguished Service Awards from the Amherst Jaycees. An organizer and first president of The Great Lorain County United Appeal and the League of Ohio Villages, Mr. Goldthorpe also helped organize and was the second president of the Ohio Municipal League. He was on the precinct committee of the Lorain County Republican Party from 1935-1957 and secretary treasurer of the party's executive committee from 1953 to 1957.
A member of St. Peters United Church of Christ in Amherst since 1944, he served as president of the church council and on several Synod committees. He also was a choir member. Mr. Goldthorpe also was a member of the Stonington Masonic Lodge in Amherst, the Lorain County and Ohio Historical Societies, Sons of the American Revolution, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Roscoe Village Foundation and the Lorain Community Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include his wife of eight years, Charlotte; sons Paul and David; daughters Janet Wander and Diane Frost; a stepdaughter, Tina Fisher; stepsons Phillip Morgan and Todd Wharton; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; and a sister Patricia Mente. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rose Ellen, in 1973. Services are private. The Malloy Memorial service of Cleveland handled arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the St. Joseph Regional Hospital Program at St. Joseph Hospital and Health Center in Lorain and the St. Peters United Church of Christ in Amherst.
