Lorain ex-mayor dies in Amherst

Paul J. Goldthorpe, (?), of 157 Orchard Hill Dr., Amherst, a former mayor of Lorain, was pronounced dead yesterday at 1:40 p.m. in Amherst Hospital after he was stricken in his home. He had been ill a year.

Mr. Goldthorpe had served as mayor of Lorain in 1930 and 31. He had also been a first ward councilman in Lorain for two years. A native of Chardon, he had lived in Amherst nine years since coming to Lorain.

After moving to Amherst, Mr. Goldthorpe had served as a civil commissioner for eight years. He was a member of First Church of Christ Scientist, Lorain, and Woodward Masonic Lodge 508 of Cleveland.

Surviving are his wife, Grace L., to whom he was married 56 years; a son, Judge David R. Goldthorpe of Amherst; a daughter, Mrs. Patricia Mentz of Long Beach, Calif., six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A private funeral service will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Garland Funeral Home, Amherst. Mrs. Robert Becker, Christian Science reader, will officiate. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery, Amherst.

The family has asked that memorial contributions be to the building fund of the First Church of Christ Scientist, Lorain.
