BORN: June 4, 1925
DIED: April 17, 2013
LOCATION: Clinton, Tennessee

Katherine Smith Bowling, age 87 of Clinton, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at Fort Sanders Medical Center in Knoxville after a brief illness. She was born June 4, 1925 at the Hodge home place in Kodak, TN to John R. and Minnie Hodge Smith and grew up in East Knox County. As a child she stood on a box in front of a wood-fired cook stove learning to cook beside her mother, and accompanied her father selling produce from their garden door-to-door. She was very fond of animals and even became a lifelong vegetarian at an early age. She married James D. Bowling on July 25, 1942 and moved to the Brooks Gap community of Anderson County where they farmed for many years, raising tobacco and registered Polled Hereford cattle. James preceded her in death in 1993 after 51 years of marriage. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and cooked Sunday dinner for the entire extended family until she was nearly 86. She enjoyed raising a large vegetable garden, canning and helping her children and grandchildren compete at the Anderson County Fair. Also preceding her in death are her son James D. Bowling Jr.; sisters Bernell Beeler and Bonnie Bowling; and four infant brothers.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, David Sr. and Judy Bowling of Heiskell; daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Lynn Anderson of Clinton; and daughter-in-law, Susan T. Bowling of Norris. Eight grandchildren: David (Victoria) Bowling of Heiskell; Matthew (Becky) Bowling of Andersonville; James III (Telena) Bowling of Oliver Springs; Mark (Kari) Bowling of Clinton; Joshua (Erin) Anderson of Heiskell; and Kimberly, Katherine and Kaara Anderson of Knoxville. Eight great-grandchildren: Nicholas, Abby, Madison, Jordan, Rhett, Callie, Daniel and Emma Bowling; sister-in-law, Lou Bowling of Clinton; several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to all the healthcare professionals who have assisted Mrs. Bowling over the past few weeks; Anderson County's EMS/first responders, the staff at Amedisys Home Health Care, McNeely Family Physicians, Norris Health & Rehabilitation Center and Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center all have our heartfelt gratitude. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Katherine's favorite charities: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Glenn W. Bowling Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 186, Tazewell, TN 37879.

The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 pm, Friday, March 19, 2013 at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home. The family will have a graveside service 11:00 am, Saturday at the Norris Memorial Garden with the Rev. Darryl Taylor officiating.
