One of our genealogists is looking up the history of buildings in Blair, and wanted to know about the person who owned the Markham confectionery store on the main street in Blair.
His name was Willis G. Markham. He was born in Michigan in 1860. His parents were both born in New York. He married a German immigrant named Hulda, and they were blessed with five children, though by 1910 sadly only 3 were living. From at least 1910 on, he was actually living in Madison, Nebraska, but he described himself as a merchant in the restaurant business.
He had graduated from the 8th grade, which was quite an accomplishment in those days. In 1920, Willis owned a bakery in Madison, Nebraska.
Two of Willis' and Hulda's children were named Norman L. , born about 1885 in Nebraska and Eunice B., born about 1890 in Nebraska.
