FREDERICKSBURG — Gene Redd, 83, of Fredericksburg died Monday, April 15, 2013.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Fredericksburg Funeral Home Chapel. Arrangements are by Fredericksburg Funeral Home of Fredericksburg.

Gene worked in all phases of cattle marketing for more than 40 years. At age 9, he spent his first summer away from home working for any rancher willing to take on a young boy eager to learn. After serving in Korea in the Army, he went to work for Hormel Packing Co., where in 1955, he was made a buyer. He bought cattle at the stockyards of Omaha from 1955 to 1960, when he was sent to the plant headquarters in Minnesota. In 1969, Gene left Hormel and settled in Amarillo, where he worked for Western Beef, Inc. He went into business for himself in 1970, purchasing slaughter cattle in the Panhandle and shipped them to processing facilities across the United States and Canada. He was known as a straight shooter and a fair dealer.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Redd of Fredericksburg; two children, Stephanie Murphy and husband Mark of Bozeman, Mont., and Wade Redd of Austin; three stepchildren, Eddie Gage and wife Carmalita of Pampa, Bill Gage of San Antonio and Weldon Gage and wife Pam of Lubbock; two grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Jessie MacDonald of Blanding, Utah; and a brother, Donald Redd of Salt Lake City.

The family suggests memorials be to American Cancer Society, or a favorite charity.
