Mrs. Rebecca Sharp, county's oldest resident, dies at 101.
San Benito County lost it's oldest resident Tuesday when death came to Mrs. Rebecca Sharp, 101 in a local hospital.

The chipper centenarian, whose birth in 1868 came three years after the Civil War and while there was a scattering of American Revolution survivors still alive, maintained her interest in the world around her through radio and television and enjoyed entertaining visitors until her filan illiness.

When Mrs. Sharp celebrated her 100th birthday at the convalescent home where she resided, the festivities were highlighted by a greeting from President and Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson as well best wishes from Robert. M. Ball, Social Security commissioner in Baltimore, MD.

Only last year Mrs. Sharp was named to the list of California's 200 oldest citizens as part of the California Bicentennial Celebration.

Mrs. Sharp was born Aug. 20, 1868, in Maryville Mo., and had been a California resident since 1889. In that year she was married to R. P. Sharp and the couple established their first home in Escondido.

A year later the Sharps moved to Santa Clara County where their Sons Eugene H. and Claude O. Sharp, were born. The Sharp family history in San Benito County dates back to the 1890's when they began farming in the Southside district on property now owned by Claude Sharp. Mrs. Sharp was widowed in 1932.

She was an active member of the Hollister Methodest Church and in 1968 received a 50-year pin making her half -century membership in the Order of Eastern Star. She was Affiliated with Athena Chapter, OES.

In addition to her sons, Claude and Eugene Sharp, Mrs. Sharp is survived by two grandsons, Eugene Sharp Jr. and Fred Sharp, both of Hollister. She was the great-grandmother of Thomas Sharp. USN, Alaska. Andrew Sharp of Hollister and John E. Sharp, Los Angeles. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of Black-Cooper-Ottesen Mortuary at 2 P.M. Friday. Private interment services will be at the IOOF Cemetery.
